How To Read A Joint Supplement Label

Turn the bottle around

The front of a supplement bottle is advertising. The back is regulated. Everything worth knowing is in the supplement facts panel and the ingredient line beneath it, and reading those two properly takes about a minute.

Proprietary blend is the phrase to look for

When a panel shows one weight covering a list of ingredients — 1,398 mg across five of them, say — that is a proprietary blend or formulation. It is legal and it is very common in this category. What it means for you is that the manufacturer has given you the total and kept the split.

What you still get is the order. Ingredients inside a blend must be listed heaviest first, so the first name is the largest share and the last is the smallest. That is genuine information and it is the only information of its kind a blend offers. JointsAid lists its five ingredients in that order, and says so plainly.

Why it matters more here than elsewhere

Joint ingredients are dose-sensitive in the research. Glucosamine trials typically use a specific daily amount; boswellia studies use standardized extracts at stated strengths. Without per-ingredient quantities you cannot line a product up against any of that work. It does not make the product useless — it makes the comparison impossible, which is a different thing and worth knowing.

Three lines that tell you the most

• Serving size. A bottle of 60 is one month at two a day and two months at one. Always compare cost per day, never per bottle.
• The other ingredients line. Capsule shell, fillers, flow agents. This is where gelatin turns up, and where a shellfish-derived ingredient may or may not be named.
• The caution text. Pregnancy, medication interactions, age limits. It is the smallest print and the part most worth reading.

Then check the promise

A supplement may say it supports something. It may not say it treats, cures or prevents a disease. Where a front label uses a strong-sounding phrase with a dagger beside it, that dagger is doing real work — it points to the FDA disclaimer.
